How to Find Your Perfect Shoe Size and Fit

The number one reason people hesitate to buy shoes online is sizing. The good news: with a ruler and two minutes, you can measure your feet accurately at home and order with confidence. Here's how.

Measure your feet in 4 steps

1. Trace your foot. Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall and trace around your foot, keeping the pen upright. Do this in the evening — feet swell slightly during the day, and you want the larger measurement.
2. Measure the length. Measure in centimeters from the back of the heel to the tip of your longest toe.
3. Measure both feet. Most people have one foot slightly larger than the other. Always go by the bigger one.
4. Add a little room. Add roughly 0.5–1 cm to your longest measurement for a comfortable fit.

Reading a size chart

Once you have your foot length in centimeters, match it to the brand's size chart rather than assuming your "usual" size. Sizing varies between brands — and even between models from the same brand — so the centimeter measurement is your most reliable guide.

Signs of a good fit

• About a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
• A secure heel that doesn't slip when you walk.
• Enough width that your foot isn't squeezed at the sides.
• Comfort straight away — quality shoes shouldn't need a long, painful "breaking in" period.

Tips by activity

Running shoes

Size up slightly. Feet swell during a run, and you want room at the toe to avoid pressure and blisters. See our running shoes guide for more.

Leave a little growing room — about 1 cm — but not so much that the shoe slips. Measure at the start of each school term, since children's feet grow fast.

Winter shoes

If you'll wear thick socks, allow a touch more room so your feet stay warm and circulation isn't cut off.
