Back to School Shoes for Kids: A Parent's Guide

A new school year means a lot of walking, running, and playing — so school shoes need to be comfortable, durable, and supportive enough to last the term. Here's a simple guide to choosing the right pair for your kids, whatever their age.

What to look for in kids' school shoes

Comfort and support

Children are on their feet all day, so cushioning and a supportive fit matter. Look for a flexible sole that bends with the foot and a padded collar around the ankle for all-day comfort.

Durability

Kids are tough on shoes. Sturdy materials, reinforced toes, and solid rubber outsoles hold up much better through recess and sports than flimsy alternatives.

Easy to put on

For younger children, velcro straps or slip-on styles make mornings faster and let them manage on their own. Older kids are usually fine with laces.

How to get the size right

Kids' feet grow quickly — sometimes a full size or more within a school year. Leave about 1 cm of room at the toe so there's space to grow, but not so much that the shoe slips at the heel. It's worth measuring their feet at the start of each term rather than guessing. Our shoe size & fit guide walks through how to measure at home.

We've made it easy to find the right styles:

  • Boys' shoes — sneakers, sports shoes, and everyday styles built to take a beating.
  • Girls' shoes — comfortable, durable options in a range of colors and designs.
  • Back to School collection — our full selection for the new term in one place.

One pair or two?

If the budget allows, a second pair pays off. A dedicated sports shoe for PE and playtime keeps the main school shoes cleaner and lasting longer — and gives little feet a break with different support.

Don't forget the extras

A good backpack and accessories round out the back-to-school checklist. Take a look at our Bags & Accessories collection to complete the set.
